Magnet Madness.

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

I have been developing a magnet collection for awhile now.  Seth surprised me this weekend and gave me these awesome magnets to add to the collection:

The second set of magnets are robot parts.  I have become rather infatuated with all things robot and Seth knew this so these were perfect!  Get your own awesome magnets here.

The first pair of Converse sneakers I owned was a pair of hunter green low-top’s.  I was 15 or 16 years old and more excited than a kid at Christmas to finally own a pair of Con’s.  I wasn’t a cool kid, but I knew what cool was and cool was definitely Converse sneakers.  I wore that pair for about five years, I think, until they were tattered, torn, and the sole was entirely worn through. The next par of Converse sneakers I owned was a pair of Navy low-top’s.  I purchased those in college.  I wore those too until they were so worn I could feel the concrete beneath my feet even as I wore the shoes.  I didn’t purchase a pair after that, though I continued (and continue) to love the shoes.

I learned about the Nike Corporation’s sweatshop practices (they purchased the Converse shoe entity) and decided to purchase the Black Spot sneaker instead.  My Blackspot sneakers have been worn out for some time and I thought I was unable to get the original Black Spot sneaker style and the newest Black Spot design, in my humble opinion, is hideous.  In honor of it being the Converse sneaker’s 123rd birthday, I will likely be purchasing at least one pair of Converse low-top sneakers with part of my tax refund – I have already filed my taxes! – but perhaps more than one pair, because there are many cute designs now.  Yes I am keeping in mind their awful sweatshop practices… Ugh… So I may also purchase a pair of the classic Black Spot sneaker too, to counterbalance my Converse purchase.

Happy 123rd birthday, Converse!

Just in case anyone cares…

An IKEA in St. Louis? Yes, please!

Monday, August 20th, 2007

IKEA is considering bringing a store to the STL Metro area (Maplewood) and I for one am a HUGE fan of IKEA.  I like the design and the price attached with IKEA goods.

If you like IKEA too and want to see an IKEA in the STL Metro area, please please please vote now!

Doc Martens

I have wanted a pair of Doc Martens for well over eleven years. I still do not own a pair. What do ya think? Would I look good in a pair of these?

Or these…

I think it’s time to save up the money and buy a pair… OR find a rich, generous benefactor. Even if they are made of cow (yes I will likely feel guilty about that).

A booklover’s dream…

Booklover’s dream…

What booklover wouldn’t want this scent to inhale at whim? If you love me, you will buy me some immediately. I’m not joking. Go. Buy it. I am waiting…!

An urban adventure.

Justin & I had been discussing for some time now purchasing a dresser.  We have been using hangers and the smaller particleboard drawer units one would purchase at a Home Depot or Lowe’s in their custom closet section. The rod holding Justin’s hung clothes up was finally too heavily laden and detached from the wall entirely.  One of the dresser drawers’ fronts came off entirely.  The drawers were all too narrow to fit many items of clothing in any case.

Awhile back I was perusing the Internet during a slower time at the office and came across a beautiful dresser on the Target website.  We’d searched in Target stores for a nice dresser, but had only found the Shabby Chic style, which Justin deplores.  I sent a link of that dresser to Justin and asked his opinion and ordered it when he said it looked nice to him.  I knew I would never order anything so heavy or large from Target again unless a promise of free shipping was made by Target when the shipping costs were totaled.  The shipping address was set for my office – as we are never home during delivery hours. This marked the beginning of our small adventure.

Last week the dresser came via UPS to my office.  The UPS man told me good luck on getting it out the door and into another vehicle because it was 130 pounds (!).  I told him we’d have to get it home somehow and my boyfriend would help me with it.  This was an extremely long box and to be honest neither Justin or I was sure it would fit into his Honda Civic Hybrid.  We somehow lifted each end as a team and were able to barely fit it into the backseat of the car.  Somehow he got the beast of a box into the house on his own – I was stuck at the office for another two hours at that point – and up to the third floor of our home.

This morning we had time and decided to tackle putting the dresser together. Sounds simple enough, right? Imagine two dogs making themselves the center of all things as you try to put the dresser together.  Then Justin made the mistake of assuming things without reading the instructions and we were forced to re-position and re-screw the molding onto the dresser and put the proper hardware into spots while removing the incorrect hardware for the proper spots. It was indeed an adventure.

A small critique of Target furnishings… The finish was scratched a bit (apparently in shipping).  A small gap exists between the top dresser drawer and the dresser top (not a fault of workmanship on our part).  The shipping costs combined with somehow needing to get the beastly box home did not make for a true convenience as online shopping is slated to be.  I will never purchase furnishings online again without free shipping – and delivered to my home not the office (in spite of needing to pick it up from the UPS store). I will likely not purchase furnishings from Target again at any rate – no matter how modern and cute some of it is – after the small flaws found on this item.
