Saturday night was the last concert for this year’s “Live Off the Levee” free concert series. The opening band was Bockman, a band I knew well several years ago. The band has improved significantly and their performance was outstanding Saturday night. Some pics I shot of their performance are located here. The main band was Rusted Root, a band I have been a fan of since Justin introduced me to them four years ago. I never thought I would be lucky enough to see them perform live, so this was a bit surreal.

Rusted Root performed many of my favorite songs and some from their upcoming album as well. It was clear that they were having fun with the show and that they enjoy performing. The talent oozes from their fingers, vocal chords, and instruments on stage. I was in awe of their musical abilities and their stage presence. More pics I shot of their performance are located here.  If you ever have a chance to see them live, definitely do. You will be well-entertained. I hope I have another opportunity to see them in my lifetime.

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

self evident
listen

yes,
us people are just poems
we’re 90% metaphor
with a leanness of meaning
approaching hyper-distillation
and once upon a time
we were moonshine
rushing down the throat of a giraffe
yes, rushing down the long hallway
despite what the p.a. announcement says
yes, rushing down the long stairs
with the whiskey of eternity
fermented and distilled
to eighteen minutes
burning down our throats
down the hall
down the stairs
in a building so tall
that it will always be there
yes, it’s part of a pair
there on the bow of noah’s ark
the most prestigious couple
just kickin back parked
against a perfectly blue sky
on a morning beatific
in its indian summer breeze
on the day that america
fell to its knees
after strutting around for a century
without saying thank you
or please

and the shock was subsonic
and the smoke was deafening
between the setup and the punch line
cuz we were all on time for work that day
we all boarded that plane for to fly
and then while the fires were raging
we all climbed up on the windowsill
and then we all held hands
and jumped into the sky

and every borough looked up when it heard the first blast
and then every dumb action movie was summarily surpassed
and the exodus uptown by foot and motorcar
looked more like war than anything i’ve seen so far
so far
so far
so fierce and ingenious
a poetic specter so far gone
that every jackass newscaster was struck dumb and stumbling
over ‘oh my god’ and ‘this is unbelievable’ and on and on
and i’ll tell you what, while we’re at it
you can keep the pentagon
keep the propaganda
keep each and every tv
that’s been trying to convince me
to participate
in some prep school punk’s plan to perpetuate retribution
perpetuate retribution
even as the blue toxic smoke of our lesson in retribution
is still hanging in the air
and there’s ash on our shoes
and there’s ash in our hair
and there’s a fine silt on every mantle
from hell’s kitchen to brooklyn
and the streets are full of stories
sudden twists and near misses
and soon every open bar is crammed to the rafters
with tales of narrowly averted disasters
and the whiskey is flowin
like never before
as all over the country
folks just shake their heads
and pour

so here’s a toast to all the folks who live in palestine
afghanistan
iraq

el salvador

here’s a toast to the folks living on the pine ridge reservation
under the stone cold gaze of mt. rushmore

here’s a toast to all those nurses and doctors
who daily provide women with a choice
who stand down a threat the size of oklahoma city
just to listen to a young woman’s voice

here’s a toast to all the folks on death row right now
awaiting the executioner’s guillotine
who are shackled there with dread and can only escape into their heads
to find peace in the form of a dream

Fat?

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

I do not generally report on celebrity nonsense. It appalls me, in fact, that so many mainstream media outlets put celebrity news ahead of reports on corruption, death tolls, natural disasters, and other less superficial news. With that being said, I feel compelled to write something on the media response to Britney Spears’ 2007 MTV VMA performance, more specifically the media’s response to her figure. Since last night’s performance, numerous bloggers and reporters have slammed Britney, calling her “fat.” Please explain to me why someone would call Britney fat based upon these photographs (these being photographs from last night’s performance).

Bennie Smith – Blues Guitarist
Originally uploaded by gina.banina.

Bennie Smith died Saturday evening in a hospital bed. He was blessed to be lucid before his death and able to say goodbye to friends and band members. He was born in St. Louis on October 5, 1933 the seventh son in a family of fourteen. Bennie Smith, described as “the dean of St. Louis electric guitarists,” has played with other greats including Chuck Berry, Ike Turner, Aretha Franklin, The Drifters, and Rufus Thomas.

Bennie Smith played the Big Muddy Blues Festival in St. Louis on September 2nd. Mayor Slay declared September 2nd Bennie Smith Day from then forward on stage next to Bennie. I was very lucky to have seen him play that evening. No one could have known that this would be one of his final performances – his last performance ever done at B.B.’s Jazz, Blues, and Soups later the evening of September 2nd.

Rest in peace, Bennie.

Mad Art Gallery

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

Friday evening I attended a concert at Mad Art Gallery in Soulard.  I had never had an opportunity to visit the Mad Art Gallery before.  The gallery has phenomenally utilized a shutdown 1930s art deco police station. I wish I had had time to fully explore the space, but what I saw was impressive. I only wish the gallery had had better acoustics and a better sound person on staff.

The gallery offered a reasonably priced cash bar. By the time the opening band began the show was standing room only.  The evening’s entertainment included Maid Rite, a presumably local all-female band, and the national act of the spunky and silly Ditty Bops. The sound was unfortunately terrible and so not all of the bands’ fantastic tunes could be heard well.  I hope to have a chance to see both bands again in a better music venue.

I do suggest you check out the Maid Rite and Ditty Bops websites and listen to the available MP3s.  These are two bands with distinctive and extraordinary sounds.  Be sure to check the bands out if and when they make it to your city or another St. Louis venue if you’re in the area.

India Arie

Originally uploaded by gina.banina.

Saturday evening I went to the India Arie concert featured as a “Live on the Levee” show in Downtown St. Louis. India was a genuine, energetic performer. The night was extremely hot and humid, which did not help comfort levels for concertgoers. India spoke about God a lot, which is a surprise to me at any secular concert. She also did a number of cover songs. That was a real disappointment to me, as I never go to a concert to hear a musician sing covers. It seems to me that unless they are just starting out there is really no excuse for wasting time with covers.

Throughout the concert, India did integrate some songs of her new album that recently came out. I discovered that I am actually a fan of her older stuff more so than her new stuff, of that which I heard. She played two of my absolute favorite of her songs at the end of the show: “Video” and “Ready for Love.” I think fans will enjoy an India Arie concert as long as they are prepared for her “God talk” and cover songs.
